The Pop Client Tab allows
you to control the way Top Dog acts when making POP connections.
Most users should
never need to concern themselves with, or change the settings on this
tab.
The POP client tab controls
the way Top Dog connects to your remote server to download incoming mail.
POP is the language that is used to download messages.
Your email reading program
connects to Top Dog to retrieve messages.
Top Dog in turn, connects to your remote server to retrieve messages.
The only control of general
interest on this tab is the frequency with which Top Dog checks the remote
server for new mail.
This interval is set to 20 minutes by default because Top Dog is set to
check for mail every time your email reading program checks for mail.
If you do not have the "Check for remote mail when mail requested"
option turned on, you may want to increase this value.
Client
Active (Check for incoming mail).
If this option is checked then
Top Dog will check remote accounts for new mail.
Check
for mail at startup.
If this option is checked then
Top Dog will check for mail when the program is started before any mail
is requested by your email program.
This option ensures that when your email program first checks for mail
Top Dog will have already checked for it.
Time
out after X Seconds Waiting For Response.
This option sets the number
of seconds that Top Dog will wait for the server to respond before concluding
that it has crashed and is not going to respond.
In this case Top Dog will disconnect.
The purpose of this is to avoid waiting forever for one mail server to
respond and therefor not checking other mail accounts or reconnecting
and trying again.
Check
for new mail every X minutes.
Sets a timer to check for new mail.
This is similar to the setting in your email reading program.
Check for remote mail when mail
requested
If enabled then every time
your email reading program checks Top Dog for mail, Top Dog will check
your email server for new mail. This causes a slight delay in your email
reading program as Top Dog negotiates with your email server for new mail.
If you have the Check for new mail every X minutes set to a reasonable
interval this should not be necessary.
By setting the "Don't make me wait longer than X seconds"
setting (Power User mode only), you can limit this delay. If you have
a fast internet connection and your messages are of a reasonable size
this should not be a problem.
Login Failures
Send
Failure Notices Every Xth Failure.
This feature is only necessary when connecting directly to Top Dog as
opposed to having Top Dog intercept connections.
In this case Top Dog needs a way to tell you that your email server is
not giving you mail.
If on the other hand connections are being intercepted then Top Dog will
simply return the error that the server gave and it is up to your email
program to notify you.
If you are connecting directly
to Top Dog and there is an error then Top Dog will send you a message
notifying you that it has failed to check a mailbox.
The reason for the failure could be that your server is temporarily inaccessible
due to a server error or a break in your internet connection.
In this case the warning can safely be ignored as Top Dog will continue
to check the mail box.
Another possibility is that the account information such as the User Id
or password you are using to access that account is incorrect.
When Top Dog sends your a warning that it has failed to access an account,
it includes your account information along with the warning.
You should verify that this information is correct and enter the correct
information if it is not.
