Spam Hound

The Spam Tab controls how Spam Hound deals with spam.

Spam Probability Threshold.

This slider determines how sensitive Spam Hound is to spam.
Each time Spam Hound processes an email it assigns a spam probability to that email.
Use this slider determine the level of spam probability that an email has to have before it is treated as spam.

Sliding the level to the left decreases the chance of Spam Hound misidentifying the email as spam but increases the chance that some spam might make it into your inbox.
Sliding the level to the right increases the chance of Spam Hound misidentifying the email as spam but decreases the chance of spam making it into your inbox.

Action to Take.

This option allows you to choose what you would like Spam Hound to do when it discovers a spam email.

  • Modify subject line.
If you choose this option Spam Hound will modify the subject line of the email by adding the text of your choice to the subject line.
This makes it easy to scan your inbox for email that Spam Hound has determined to be spam.
Alternatively, you can then use the rules in your email reader to sort the spam email into a special folder.

  • Send e-mail to the Doghouse (quarantine)
    This is the recommended action.
If this option is chosen then Spam Hound will send all email it considers to be spam to the Doghouse.
From the Doghouse you can sort email by spam probability, safely preview them, categorize them and either delete them or release them into your inbox.

  • Delete the e-mail completely
Choose this option to have Spam Hound permanently delete any email it determines to be spam.
This option should be used only if you really trust Spam Hound not to make any mistakes.
The safer option is to send email to the Doghouse. This way you can double check that email detected as spam is actually spam.

Mailing Lists and Bulk Mail.

Check this option if you are not interested in receiving any bulk mail.
Bulk mail is mail that is sent to more than one person and is much easier to detect than spam.
Most people want some bulk email. An example of desired bulk email is an email distribution list that you have joined up for.
Spam Hound has many ways of detecting bulk email if you are not interested in receiving any bulk email than Spam Hound can very effectively screen out any email that was not intended for you alone. Distinguishing desired bulk email from spam is a much more difficult task.

Edit List of Known Mailing Lists...

This button displays a list of known mailing lists.
You can use this list to tell Spam Hound what email lists you want to receive and which ones you do not.
Some spammers pretend they are mailing lists to fool spam protection into accepting the email even though it is a bulk mailing.
If you categorize an email that came from a mailing list as spam then Spam Hound will consider all email from that mailing list spam.
This avoids the necessity to categorize each individual email from that mailing list as spam.
If on the other hand you flag an mailing list as being wanted then Spam Hound will always let that email from that mailing list through as well as whitelisting all people on the mailing list.

If you click on the Show Details checkbox you can see all the markers that Spam Hound uses to determine if an email belongs to a known mailing list.
It is not recommended that you modify these settings as Spam Hound automatically detects them in the contents of incoming email.
