General Instructions (see below for detailed
help)
Printing a Chart:
- Start Chartbook Maker by
double clicking on the program icon, or drag and drop a KAP file onto
the program icon.
- Under the File menu
choose Open.
- Browse to the location of
your charts, click on the chart you want to open and click OK.
- At this point Chartbook
Maker will display your chart and create a number of tabs.
The first tab is the index print which will show the whole chart along
with the page tiles that make it up.
The remaining tabs will be the individual pages of your chart book.
- You can now press the Printer
Setup button if you are not happy with the current layout.
- Press the Print
button to print the index sheet and all subsequent pages that make up
the chartbook.
- Go Boating!
You may also want to refer
to the Printing Tips
page for further help.
Note regarding file names:
Chartbook Maker works with all BSB type marine charts.
Somewhat confusingly the charts themselves are stored in files with the
file extension *.KAP.
It is the KAP files that Chartbook maker reads.
Chartbook Maker also opens
it's own propitiatory charts.
These charts have the file extension *.CHT
Index
Sheet Tab
This tab shows the whole chart
along with the boundaries of the individual tiled pages that make up the
chartbook.
The purpose of it is to act as sort of an index so by referring to it,
you can quickly and easily find the page of the chartbook that covers
the area you are interested in.
Page Tabs
These tabs are only visible
once a chart is opened.
Each tab represents a page of your chart book as it will be printed.
They are automatically generated depending on your printer settings.
If you change your printer settings these tabs will be recreated to reflect
the number and size of the printed pages.
View Scale
This option allows you to choose
the scale at which the index sheet is displayed.
It is located to the left of the index sheet on the Index Sheet Tab.
This allows you to zoom in to view details of the chart.
Changing the view scale will
not change the resolution at which the chart is printed.
Charts are always printed at the resolution that the printer is set at.
You can change the print resolution by clicking on the Printer
Setup or Print buttons.
Note: Larger charts are loaded at a reduced resolution to increase speed
and minimize the amount of memory required by Chartbook Maker.
This will not affect the resolution when printing.
Print Scale
This option allows you to choose
the scale at which the index sheet is printed.
It is located to the left of the index sheet on the Index Sheet Tab.
By default the chart
will print at the same scale as the original chart.
Changing the scale will change the number of pages the chart will need
to print as well as the amount of overlap between pages.
Zooming out:
To print the chart using fewer pages choose a percentage less than 100%.
This will result in less detail but more area covered per page.
Zooming
in:
To print the chart using more pages choose a percentage greater than 100%.
This will result in more detail on each page and more pages in your chart
book.
It is often possible to zoom
out (thus increasing the detail on each page), without increasing the
number pages.
This is possible by reducing the amount of overlap between pages.
To view the amount of overlap between pages see the Page Outlines section
immediately following this section.
Page
Outlines
Use this to choose the way
page outlines are displayed in the index sheet.
It is located to the left of the index sheet on the Index Sheet Tab.
Page outlines are used to delineate the area covered by each page in the
chartbook.
On the index chart, you can select each page to highlight it for easier
viewing.
There are three choices for
viewing pages on the index sheet:
- Show Page Outlines
This option will show the outline of each page in an easy to read way.
This is also the option which will be used when printing.
- Show Page Overlaps
This option shows the page outlines of each page as they will actually
be printed.
Because the chart usually cannot be printed on an even number of smaller
pages without whitespace there will inevitably be some overlap between
pages.
I.e. Some areas of the chart will appear on more than one chart.
This is a good thing because it means that if you are viewing an area
that falls between pages you will not have to keep flipping between
pages.
However, it can be confusing to look at because the page outlines do
not form nice boxes.
- Hide Page Outlines
This option will hide the page outlines, giving a view of the original
chart.
Page Numbers
This option allows you to choose
the page number to start printing from.
It is located to the left of the index sheet on the Index Sheet Tab.
The purpose of this option
is to allow you to easily combine more than one chartbook without having
two or more pages labeled "Page 1".
For example if you were going to combine two charts of 8 pages each you
would print the first one starting at page 1 and the second one starting
at page 9.
You would then put both Index sheets at the start of the booklet and add
the rest sequentially.
This way you can easily flip to the correct page right off of the index
sheet.
Color
This option optimizes the color
separation when printing to a black and white printer.
It is located to the left of the index sheet on the Index Sheet Tab.
When printing a color image
to a black and white printer it can be difficult to differentiate between
shades that were distinct in color.
If you use the "grayscale" setting, colors will be mapped to
shades of gray in such a way as to make the chart most readable.
Printer Setup
Clicking on this button will
bring up a dialogue which will enable you to change your printer options.
When printer settings are changed Chartbook Maker will automatically recompose
the individual pages of your chartbook needed to cover the entire chart
area.
You can also change your printer settings using the Print
button but this is not recommended as you will not have the chance to
preview the results before they are printed.
Print
Not surprisingly, this button
will bring up a dialogue which will enable you to print all or some of
the chartbook pages.
You can also change your printer settings here but this is not recommended
as you will not have the chance to preview the results before they are
printed.
Instead it is recommended that you use the Printer
Setup button.
The print dialog enables you
to choose what pages you would like to print.
When printing charts that contain a lot of open ocean or uninteresting
inland areas you may choose not to print all pages to reduce the size
of your chart book.
Tip: You can right click on
the list of pages for more options.
